Welcome to First Grade!

Hi! We are the first grade teachers Nancy Pelletier and Kristen DiFiore.  On our blog you will find monthly newsletters, current photographs and weekly spelling lists as well as some relevant websites for reinforcement of  concepts.  In first grade we will cover several math topics including number sense, place value, probability and geometry.  Our language arts program consists of daily independent and small group reading and discussions, through whole language and phonics based instruction.  Writing workshop includes mini lessons on writing mechanics, techniques and genres.  In social studies we will study various contries from different continents.

Dear Families,

Time is flying by and the children are getting more and more excited about Halloween.  It seems that as soon as the month changes to October on our calendar the anticipation mounts daily.  We are doing our best to shift their attention to more academic areas and so far have been quite successful.  The classroom routine is going smoothly and the children are enthusiastically working each and every day.  It has been fun watching them build confidence in their abilities as first graders.

The first and fourth grades will be taking a trip to Secor Farms this Monday, October 19th.  We will be going with our third grade reading buddies from last year so the children will be paired with a fourth grader.  Please make sure your child is dressed properly.  Layers usually work best at this time of year since the weather is so unpredictable.  We will be leaving in the morning and returning in time for lunch.

We have been learning about the world and examining maps and globes of the world.  The children should know that there are five oceans and seven continents.  They have been learning the approximate locations by playing the game Travel Around the World and filling out their own world map.  The game is similar to CandyLand but uses continents and oceans instead of colors.

This week we will begin studying the human skeleton in science, which first graders absolutely love.  If you have any interesting animal bones at home, it would be wonderful if your child could bring them in to show the class and leave them here on display for a little while.  It is also fun for the children to see x-rays of real bones.

In math, we are beginning to count coins and are first reviewing the value of pennies and nickels.  Please work with your child at home counting pennies and nickels.  Just giving them real change to count will reinforce what we are learning in school.  We will be adding dimes and quarters shortly.  We are also collecting pennies and trying to find a penny from every year as far back as possible.  If you have any spare pennies that we could add to our collection, please send them in.

It is exciting for us to hear a cheer when it is time for writing workshop.  The children already have a good idea of what a story is and are working on getting the words they want to say on the page.  We will begin to model stories containing typical first grade errors.  We sometimes write and have them help find errors, with a discussion following about how the errors can be corrected.  They will become good detectives at finding mistakes we make, and they love the fact that we make mistakes too.  This activity will also help them be able to correct more things on their own.

Please let us know if you are planning on attending ‘pumpkin math’.  It helps us in planning our groups for the day.  Well, it is a busy month and we are looking forward to sharing more with each of you at our November conferences.  See you then.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                                          Nancy  and Kristen

Dear Families,

It was great seeing so many of you at Parent Night.  The children loved getting their notes in the morning, thank you for taking the time to write them.  The classroom routine is going smoothly and the children are enthusiastically working each and every day.  It has been fun watching them build confidence in their abilities as first graders.

In science, we have continued to study about air.  The children have loved the experiments and I hope you will let them show you some of them at home.  The directions to make a parachute are in their white envelopes today.  The completed parachutes should be returned by next Wednesday.  We will try them all out during class and  begin studying the human skeleton shortly thereafter.

The children have been enjoying learning the names of fruits and reviewing numbers and colors in French class.  Mme. Verdier speaks to them almost entirely in French and it is always amazing to me how they can understand her directions.

We are beginning to develop their math skills and the children should begin to work on basic facts at home.  We encourage you to play some of the games that are on the family letters at the beginning of each unit and also in the reference book sent home on Parent Night.  The children should also be able to tell you about the games we are playing in class, which can usually be easily made at home.

In music, they have been working on songs and activities that focus on keeping a steady beat.  The children have been playing many unpitched instruments (triangles, wood blocks, hand drums, tambourines, claves, maracas and vibra slap).  They have also participated in activities to aid them in becoming more discerning listeners.

At the end of the month we will be having a “pumpkin math” activity.  It is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27th at 9:00.  This requires the help of parents who don’t mind getting messy.  We will be measuring and counting pumpkin seeds from real pumpkins.  If you can help out, please email us, as we will need at least six parents.

Please look in your child’s backpack each night for a reading book that is to be read to someone at home.  This should be a part of the twenty minutes of reading.  The children look forward to sharing the books we have read in class with their families at home.  They will not have a book every night, but often the students ask for books to take home.  We also have a class book that is making the rounds through the class.  Please read the book as soon as possible and send it back so that another child can take it home.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming up in November.  We will be scheduling conferences all day on Friday, November 20th and on Monday, November 23rd from 12:30 – 3:00.  Please call Cynthia Schneider at the front desk to schedule your appointment.

We are truly enjoying getting to know your children.  As always, if you have any questions, please email or call.

September 17, 2009

Dear Families,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a relaxing and refreshing summer. The children are all very enthusiastic and ready to get back to work and Kristen and I are looking forward to a busy and productive first grade year.

Below is a list of our special classes each week. Our schedule has changed a little since last week and we now, hopefully, have our final schedule. Thank you for remembering to send in sneakers and water bottles already.

Monday P.E., library, music

Tuesday art, French, science, P.E.

Wednesday computer, P.E. science

Thursday P.E., art, French

Friday library, music

The homework routine is becoming established and the children are excited to bring the homework home on Monday and Wednesday. It is your child’s responsibility to complete and return the homework the next morning. Please let me know if there is ever a problem with an assignment. This is not meant to be a source of stress for your child, but rather a learning experience and chance to practice responsibility.

Included in today’s white envelope is a list of sight words the children should be familiar with from kindergarten. Please put them on your refrigerator or some well-seen location and go over them with your child. I will be adding to them throughout the year and will send you an updated list occasionally.

The white envelope will come home on Thursdays and should be returned to school the next day. It will contain work your child has completed and any information sent home from the office. The Fencepost (every week) and our newsletters (about once a month) will be sent home via e-mail and will be available on the first grade blog on-line. If you would like it sent to an additional e-mail address or have difficulty receiving things through e-mail please let me know.

First grade will be taking our first field trip on Tuesday, September 22nd to Terhune Orchards in Salt Point. We will be returning in time for lunch. We will have a short educational program about apples and then walk up the hill to pick apples. The program begins at 9:30 and we would love for you to join us! Please let me know if you need directions.

Kristen will be here to tell you all about the math, spelling, reading and writing programs next Thursday, September 25th , at our Lower School Parent Night. Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend because of my own children’s open houses. If you would like to meet with me at another time, please e-mail me and we can set up a convenient time.

It has been wonderful for Kristen, Donna and I to get to know your children over the past week and to feel their enthusiasm and warmth. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at school or e-mail me at pelletier@dutchessday.org.

Sincerely,

Nancy Pelletier

Dear Families,

We had a terrific day today getting to know the children and starting new routines. We will write a full newsletter next week. Today, we just wanted to remind you of a few things.

Enclosed in this envelope is a tag with your last name on it. This can be rubber banded to your car visor to make the pick-up line quicker for everyone. When waiting in line, just put down your visor so that the teacher in charge can see your name and can quickly get your child ready to load up and get going.

Please send in sneakers that can be left in the gym for P.E. as soon as possible. Also, please send in a water bottle as the days are usually warm in the beginning of the year. The children do go outside at least once every day so please take time in the evening to do a complete tick check before bed.

Homework nights will be Monday and Wednesday. Please let your children do their homework on their own. We expect them to work no more than 20 minutes on it. If they are still not done, just pop the homework back in the folder and return it to school unfinished. Also, please make it part of your evening routine to include 10 to 20 minutes of reading. We don’t consider this homework and believe this should be an enjoyable way to end your day with your child.

Our newsletters will be sent about once a month by e-mail and posted on the first grade web page. If you ever have problems opening the attachment, please e-mail us back and we will cut and paste the newsletter into the e-mail so that it is easier for you to read.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please e-mail or call us at school and leave a message on voicemail. We will get back to you as soon as possible. However, please do not leave messages about dismissal changes or absences. Those messages need to go directly to the office since we may not be checking our voicemail before the end of the day.

Sincerely,

Nancy Pelletier and Kristen DiFiore
